Politico Rolls Out ‘Decoded’ – A Fresh Tech‑Policy Subscription Service

After 15 years of Pro, Politico introduces Decoded, a $1,000‑a‑year tech‑policy newsletter and podcast that will soon sit behind a paywall

Politico expands beyond its flagship Pro offering with Decoded, a new tech‑policy briefing powered by a global team of reporters, launching Oct. 5 and slated for a paid subscription in early 2027.

After more than a decade of building its Pro platform, Politico is branching out. On October 5 the news outlet will debut Decoded, a daily briefing that focuses on technology policy and will be paired with a companion podcast.

Goli Sheikholeslami, Politico’s chief executive, says the move is about “bringing the same depth of reporting that Pro users expect to a niche that’s shaping the future of politics.” The product will tap into the work of nearly 50 journalists stationed in Washington, D.C., Sacramento, London, Brussels and other bureaus around the world.

For now, Decoded is free for existing Pro subscribers and will offer a limited preview to anyone else who signs up. The plan, however, is to put both the newsletter and the podcast behind a paywall in the first quarter of 2027. When that happens, the subscription will run at roughly $1,000 per year – a fraction of the price of the full‑fledged Pro package, yet still promising a comparable level of insight.

Chris Cadelago, newly appointed executive editor for global technology and California, will lead the Decoded team. He’s tasked with curating the daily email, overseeing the podcast production, and ensuring the coverage stays ahead of the rapid‑moving tech‑policy landscape.

What sets Decoded apart, according to the announcement, is its blend of on‑the‑ground reporting and expert analysis. Think of it as a single source where policymakers, industry insiders and the everyday reader can all get a clear picture of how legislation, regulation and innovation intersect.

While the launch is still fresh, the industry is already watching. If Decoded can attract a solid subscriber base, it could signal a new revenue model for niche journalism—one that leans on premium, specialized content rather than broad‑stroke news.

In short, Politico is betting that readers – and advertisers – will find enough value in a focused tech‑policy briefing to pay for it, even before the broader Pro audience does.
