Political Storm: Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Students Ki Goonj’ Event Triggers BJP Outcry Over Modi Mimicry

On a breezy evening in Indore, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took the stage for his youth‑focused "Students Ki Goonj" program. The event, meant to engage students and talk about education, suddenly found itself at the centre of a political firestorm.

Midway through, comedian Pulkit Mani stepped up and launched into a mimicry of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He copied the PM’s characteristic hand gestures and cadence, even reenacting a 2024 rally moment where Modi asked organisers for a chair for an elderly woman. The sketch concluded with the phrase “maa ko kursi do,” a line that BJP leaders said poked fun at Modi’s late mother.

The BJP wasted no time. Party chief Pradeep Bhandari called the performance "demeaning" and questioned why Rahul Gandhi was on the same stage while the act aired. Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav also chimed in, urging the Congress to apologise for what he termed "unnecessary disrespect".

Congress, however, pushed back hard. Rajya Sabha leader Pramod Tiwari insisted that Rahul Gandhi never uttered any comment about the Prime Minister’s mother and that the sketch was simply satire. He accused the BJP of trying to divert attention from genuine student issues, especially as elections loom in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

The spat quickly turned into a classic BJP‑Congress showdown, with each side trading barbs over the limits of political humour, respect for public figures and the role of satire in public discourse. As youth‑related themes dominate the pre‑election narrative, the controversy adds yet another layer to the already charged atmosphere.

Whether the incident will sway voters remains to be seen, but it underscores how a few minutes on stage can spark a nationwide debate in India’s vibrant democracy.
