Polish Restaurant Delight Wish Closes Its Doors After a Tough Carryout‑Only Experiment

When Paul and Maggie Adamuzyk first rolled up a tent in front of River Hawk Brewery back in 2020, they were simply sharing a taste of home – pierogi, bigos, and the sort of hearty fare that reminds you of a grandmother’s kitchen.

Fast‑forward to April 24, 2021, and the couple moved the operation indoors, opening Delight Wish inside the former Channahon animal hospital. The spot was easy to find – tucked between a Dollar General and the now‑closed River Hawk Brewery, just a mile from the I‑55 exit on Route 6.

For a while, locals could walk in and enjoy schnitzel, pork chops, stuffed cabbage, and other Polish‑European classics cooked from recipes that had been handed down for generations. Reviewers praised the authenticity, and occasional comments on social media begged for more Polish restaurants in the Chicago region.

But good food alone didn’t keep the doors open. The Adamuzyks struggled to get the word out beyond a handful of regulars. Despite a solid menu – from pierogi and blintzes to beef steak and a side of potato pancakes – foot traffic stayed modest.

In early 2026 the owners tried a drastic pivot. They closed the indoor dining room, rebranded the business as “Delight Wish Diner Express & Liquor Store,” and turned the place into a buffet‑style, carryout‑only operation. The idea was to capture the growing demand for quick, take‑home meals while cutting overhead costs.

Unfortunately, the new concept never took off. Customers who had enjoyed the sit‑down experience missed the ambience, and the carryout model didn’t attract enough new patrons to make up the shortfall.

On July 20, the restaurant posted a heartfelt Facebook notice: “We regret to inform you that after much consideration, DW Diner Express & Liquor Store will be closing its doors permanently on 8/9/26. This decision was not made lightly, and we are incredibly grateful for your support and loyalty over the years.” The message also reminded patrons that gift cards could be redeemed until the closing date and encouraged one last visit before the final day.

Paul, who arrived in the Chicago area in 2003, reflected that the journey had been both rewarding and challenging. “We wanted to bring a piece of Poland to Channahon and share it with the community,” he wrote. “Even though we’re closing, we’ll always cherish the moments we spent cooking for our neighbors.”

The closure will leave a noticeable gap in the local dining scene. With few other Polish or Eastern‑European options nearby, fans of pierogi and kielbasa will have to travel farther for a taste of the Old World.

Delight Wish’s story is a reminder of how small, family‑run eateries often walk a tightrope between culinary passion and the hard realities of marketing, rent, and shifting consumer habits. As the town says goodbye, many hope that another entrepreneur might one day revive that unique flavor on Route 6.
