Police Integrity Questioned: Tirupattur SSI Nabbed in Bribery Sting

Well, that’s exactly the kind of news that’s emerged from Tirupattur, Tamil Nadu, where a Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) named G. Ramakrishnan, aged 49, found himself in hot water, arrested on some pretty serious bribery charges. It seems he allegedly demanded and even accepted a sum of money to release a vehicle that had been impounded following an accident.

The story, as it unfolds, began with an accident that took place back on July 19th. A vehicle was involved, and as is standard procedure, it was seized. Now, according to the complaint, SSI Ramakrishnan, who was responsible for handling accident-related cases within the Alangayam and Kavalur police limits, saw an opportunity, apparently. He initially set the bar quite high, demanding a whopping ₹15,000 to get the vehicle released. Can you imagine? After some back and forth, it seems they settled on ₹5,000.

That’s when M. Manjunathan, the complainant in this rather unfortunate saga, decided enough was enough. Instead of simply paying up, he took the courageous step of lodging a complaint with the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) unit in Tirupattur. And, true to their mandate, the DVAC sprang into action. They meticulously planned a sting operation, a carefully laid trap, if you will, to catch the officer red-handed.

Sure enough, during the operation, SSI G. Ramakrishnan was nabbed while allegedly accepting the ₹5,000 bribe. The swift action by the DVAC underscores their commitment to rooting out corruption within public service. It sends a clear message, doesn't it, that such activities will not be tolerated, especially from those in positions of power and trust.

Following his arrest, Ramakrishnan was promptly lodged at the sub-jail in Tirupattur town.
