PM Modi Turns 76: BJP Rolls Out Massive Seva Campaign with Twin Bike Rallies

On Thursday, the BJP lit the fuse on a sweeping, month‑long service drive that the party says is meant to honour Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 76th birthday and his 25‑year stint in public office. The centerpiece of the effort is a pair of motorcycle yatras – one set off from Modi’s tiny hometown of Vadnagar in Gujarat, the other from his political base in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Home Minister Amit Shah will hoist the flag for the Gujarat‑to‑Varanasi leg, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will do the same for the reverse route. Both rallies are slated to start simultaneously on September 17 – declared ‘Seva Diwas’ – and they will keep rolling until October 7, the day Modi first became chief minister of Gujarat back in 2001.

The numbers are, frankly, staggering. According to BJP leader V.D. Sharma, about 250 motorcycles will stream out of each city, threading their way through 193 districts and nearly 1,200 villages in ten states. In total the twin convoys will log close to 40,000 km, with roughly a thousand youngsters strapped on the saddles, eager to take part in what the party dubs the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’. It’s a blend of celebration and outreach – a rally‑cross of political symbolism and grassroots service.

But the bike rides are only the tip of the iceberg. Alongside the two yatras, the BJP has lined up a smorgasbord of activities: street‑level cleanliness drives, blood‑donation camps, free medical check‑ups, and a host of welfare‑scheme outreach programmes collectively called ‘Seva Setu’. In Delhi, party president Nitin Nabin will inaugurate a blood‑donation camp at the BJP headquarters before hopping off to Madhya Pradesh for a series of events in Indore and Ujjain.

In Gujarat, the fan‑fare reaches a fever pitch. The state government says more than 8.8 million earthen lamps will be lit across 18,500 sites, beginning at 6 pm with devotional music and discourses, and culminating in a massive lighting ceremony at 7 pm. In Ahmedabad, Shah and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will offer prayers at the Jagannath Temple before overseeing a spectacular lamp‑lighting at Kankaria Lake – a display that alone will involve about 125,000 lamps. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has added another 76,000 lamps on the new Atal Bridge and plans roughly 480,000 lamps spread across the city’s 48 wards.

Even the high‑profile political heavyweights are getting in on the act. From Gujarat, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Union Minister Anupriya Patel will join Shah at the Vadnagar flag‑off. In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and Union Minister Chirag Paswan are slated to stand beside Rajnath Singh when the Varanasi leg gets underway. The intention, officials say, is to showcase a party that is as much about service as it is about politics.

Across the nation, the BJP hopes the twin yatras will act as a connective tissue, stitching together remote villages and bustling towns under a single banner of ‘seva’ – service. By the time the final lantern flickers on October 7, the party expects the campaign will have left an imprint far deeper than any one rally, reinforcing the narrative that Modi’s journey from a small‑town tea‑seller’s son to the nation’s premier is, at its core, a story of public service.
