A colossal magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in the southern Philippines, triggering immediate tsunami warnings for the region and extending to neighboring Japan. The powerful tremor, which sent shockwaves across the Pacific, prompted widespread panic and evacuations as authorities urged coastal residents to seek higher ground.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued an urgent tsunami warning, advising people in vulnerable areas in Surigao Del Sur and Davao Oriental to evacuate.

Initial reports indicated the potential for destructive tsunami waves, although thankfully, subsequent observations confirmed only small wave activity, leading to a downgrade of the most severe alerts. However, the initial threat underscored the sheer power of the undersea quake.

In Japan, the national weather agency also issued tsunami warnings for its southwestern coast, anticipating waves of up to one meter.
