Philadelphia Mom Charged After 5‑Month‑Old Drowns in Lancaster County Hotel Spa

On May 11, a tragic scene unfolded in a modest hotel in Leacock Township, Lancaster County, when a 5‑month‑old baby was found unresponsive in a spa tub. The child’s mother, 25‑year‑old Dionna Beckett, has since been arrested and charged with reckless endangerment of a child and involuntary manslaughter.

According to the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office, Beckett admitted to police that she had been drinking throughout the day. She said she took her daughter for a swim earlier in the afternoon, then returned to their room and, while still under the influence, placed the infant in the hotel’s hot‑water spa tub.

Even though Beckett later claimed she never put the baby in the tub, investigators say a photo and a short video recovered from her phone clearly show the infant sitting in the water. Hotel surveillance footage allegedly captures Beckett walking into the lobby cradling a baby who appears lifeless in her arms.

Witnesses — other hotel guests — called 911 as soon as they realized something was wrong, and they attempted basic life‑saving measures until first responders arrived. Unfortunately, those efforts could not reverse the outcome.

A breathalyzer test taken at the scene indicated Beckett’s blood‑alcohol level was 0.149 %, well above the legal limit for driving and suggestive of significant impairment.

Beckett appeared in court on Wednesday, waiving her preliminary hearing. She was released on a $100,000 bail after the judge accepted her plea.

The case has reignited community concerns about child safety, especially when parents are under the influence of alcohol. Child welfare advocates stress the importance of vigilance and remind caregivers that even a short lapse can have irreversible consequences.
