Pay Your Bills Directly on WhatsApp – One App, All Your Payments

On Thursday, WhatsApp announced a feature that many of us have been waiting for: the ability to pay everyday bills right inside the messaging app. No more hopping between dozens of apps or hunting for account numbers – just a few taps and the payment is done.

The service taps into India’s Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, giving users access to more than 22,000 billers across 30 categories. Think electricity, water, gas, FASTag, insurance premiums, credit‑card dues and even loan repayments. If you’ve ever wondered whether you could settle your gas bill while chatting with a friend, the answer is now a resounding yes.

WhatsApp is rolling the feature out gradually across the country. In the coming weeks it should appear for all Android and iOS users, and you’ll spot a new icon at the top of the home screen. Tapping it opens a “Payments Home” where you can see a snapshot of upcoming bills, glance at what you’ve already paid, and even manage multiple accounts for the same provider – handy for separating home and office utilities.

Arun Srinivas, Meta’s India Managing Director, summed it up nicely: WhatsApp has become the go‑to place for chatting, ordering metro tickets, recharging phones and even accessing government services. Adding bill payments is just the next logical step, bringing another routine task into the same familiar interface.

What’s clever about the design is the way the most‑used categories pop up automatically. If you pay electricity most often, that tile shows up first, with a “see all” button if you need to scroll through the full list of 20‑plus options. It feels almost like the app is learning what you need, then offering it without you having to search.

Security hasn’t been left behind either. Payments are processed through the BBPS framework, which is already trusted for millions of transactions across India. Users can choose their preferred payment method – UPI, debit/credit card or any other supported option – and the experience is meant to be as smooth as sending a text.

In a country where digital payments have surged thanks to UPI and widespread smartphone adoption, this move could further simplify life for millions, especially those in remote areas who might not have easy access to banks or traditional bill‑pay portals. As the feature spreads, the hope is that paying a bill will become as effortless as sending a “Good morning” emoji.
