Paul Finebaum Raises Alarm: Bill Belichick’s Future at UNC May Be in Danger

Michael Lombardi, who had been serving as UNC’s general manager, officially stepped down on Thursday. The move came after he was put on administrative leave in July following a human‑resources complaint filed by a former front‑office employee.

Not long after Lombardi’s resignation, WRAL reported that the university’s internal investigation has now turned its attention to Steve Belichick, the defensive coordinator and, yes, the son of head coach Bill Belichick. The probe is still ongoing, and UNC certainly isn’t thrilled about the extra‑ordinary media circus at the start of a season that already feels a little shaky after last year’s underwhelming debut.

Enter Paul Finebaum, the ever‑talkative college‑football analyst. On Friday he gave his take on the swirling rumors, basically saying that Bill Belichick’s job could be on the line. "What’s so interesting is, I mean, we were just here Monday talking about what a great win it was for Bill Belichick in Dublin. It was the biggest win he’s had since Tom Brady was his quarterback. And now that seems like a million miles away," Finebaum said, chuckling a bit as he wrapped his hands around the story.

Finebaum went on, "And the one other thing, we still don’t know the status of Bill Belichick’s son. It is just an absolutely terrible story for Belichick. And if he has a decent season, North Carolina may look the other way. But if this season spirals out of control with a brutal schedule, it might be better for them to say, ‘Listen, this was a bad idea. Thank you, Bill. We’ll see you in Canton. We’ll come visit you. But you’re out of here.’"

The Tar Heels opened the year with a 15‑10 victory over TCU in Dublin, Ireland – a win that felt like a page‑turner given that the Horned Frogs were 7½‑point favorites after a 9‑4 campaign, while UNC had barely managed a 4‑8 record the season before. And that was all achieved without Steve Belichick, who was on medical leave at the time.

But Finebaum reminded fans that the good news is short‑lived. After a home game against East Tennessee State on Sept. 12 – a match UNC should comfortably win – the schedule turns into a gauntlet: a road showdown at Clemson, a home tilt against Notre Dame, then back‑to‑back away games at Pittsburgh and Duke, and finally a clash with national‑runner‑up Miami just two weeks later.

It’s a brutal stretch. If the Tar Heels stumble and finish with another losing record, the experiment that began only a year ago – hiring an NFL legend to lead a college program – could very well be called off.

For now, UNC fans are left with more questions than answers, and the university’s leadership will have to decide whether to ride out the storm or cut its losses before the season’s tide turns even worse.
