Patriots Bring Back Defensive Tackle Isaiah Iton After Injured Reserve Stint

The New England Patriots, ever tinkering with their roster as training camp looms, have officially brought back defensive tackle Isaiah Iton. This isn't Iton's first dance in Foxborough, but it certainly marks a significant new chapter, especially after he spent the entirety of the 2025 season sidelined on injured reserve. The team's move, announced around July 20th, 2026, also saw the release of fellow defensive lineman Travis Shaw to clear a spot on the 90-man roster.

Iton, a first-year defensive tackle, initially joined the Patriots in May of 2025. Hopes were understandably high, but unfortunately, a hip injury struck in mid-August of that year, effectively ending his season before it truly began. Prior to his Patriot tenure, Iton had a brief stint with the Tennessee Titans. He signed with them as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Ole Miss back in May 2024, spending some time on their practice squad before being released in April 2025. It's a tough path for many aspiring NFL players, constantly battling for a roster spot, and Iton knows that grind all too well.

To make room for Iton, New England parted ways with undrafted free agent Travis Shaw. Shaw, unfortunately, finds himself looking for a new opportunity just as camp is about to kick off. The defensive line room in Foxborough is, to put it mildly, quite crowded. Iton will be joining a rather deep group that already includes established players like Christian Barmore and Milton Williams, alongside others such as Cory Durden, Leonard Taylor, Eric Gregory, Jeremiah Pharms Jr., and even fellow undrafted rookie David Blay. He's got his work cut out for him, no doubt about it.

Coming from a truly diverse collegiate background that included stops at Hutchinson Community College, Northern Colorado, Rutgers, and Ole Miss, Iton has certainly seen his share of locker rooms. He's a Pearland, Texas product, and while his NFL experience is limited to a few preseason snaps with the Titans against the Commanders and Vikings, his raw size and potential must be what the Patriots scouts are seeing. With training camp officially set to open on July 24th, 2026, Iton has just a few precious days to re-acclimate, get up to speed, and prove he truly belongs. It’s a clean slate, a fresh start, and a critical opportunity to show he’s fully recovered and ready to contribute to the Patriots' defense.
