Pacific Surfliner Set for Full Shutdown on Sept. 12‑13 – What You Need to Know

If you were counting on a breezy train ride along the coast this weekend, you might want to press the pause button. Amtrak just announced that the Pacific Surfliner will be completely halted between San Diego and San Luis Obispo on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13.

There won’t be any substitute buses either, so the usual train‑to‑bus connections you might have relied on simply won’t exist. In short, if your itinerary includes Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Ventura or the Central Coast for those two days, you’ll need a Plan B.

The shutdown stems from a coordinated effort by Union Pacific, Metrolink and the North County Transit District to tackle several maintenance projects at once. Instead of teasing travelers with sporadic delays over weeks, the rail agencies decided to bundle the work into a single, two‑day window. It’s a bit of a hassle now, but it should mean fewer headaches later.

Down south, crews will be busy on the Orange Subdivision just south of Irvine Station. They’re extending Marine Way beneath the tracks and adding extra access points to the Great Park. Over in San Clemente, workers are re‑configuring zones for slope stabilization and rebuilding a nearby trail.

Up north, the Ventura Subdivision gets attention inside Tunnel 26 north of Chatsworth. Expect ballast cleaning, water‑pump maintenance and a handful of general track rehab tasks. All of this is aimed at keeping the line safe and reliable for the future.

Heads‑up for Friday, September 11: Metrolink’s evening services will be hit too. Train 794 will end its run in Los Angeles with a bus replacement, while Train 595 will be outright canceled and also swapped for a bus. So if you’re traveling that night, factor in extra time.

Amtrak’s connection buses will still run over the weekend, but don’t assume they’ll line up with your usual train schedule – the regular train‑to‑bus handoffs simply won’t happen. Check the Amtrak website or app for the latest updates, and consider driving, ridesharing, or alternative train routes if you can.

Bottom line: the Pacific Surfliner is taking a short nap, but the coast doesn’t have to. With a little forethought, you can still enjoy the sunshine and scenery without missing your plans.
