Off-Duty Firefighter Becomes Real-Life Hero, Dives into Canal for Dramatic Rescue

In a breathtaking act of heroism, an off-duty Cameron Park firefighter sprang into action early Tuesday morning, plunging into a canal to rescue a driver trapped inside a submerged vehicle near Highway 50 in Sacramento.

Justin McBroom, a dedicated firefighter with the Cameron Park Fire Department, was on his way to work when he witnessed a car veering off the road and plummeting into a canal around 7:30 a.m.

Without a moment's hesitation, McBroom pulled over, his professional instincts kicking in.

The scene was dire: the vehicle was rapidly sinking, and the driver, identified as a 16-year-old, was trapped inside. McBroom bravely dove into the cold water, battling against the current and the urgency of the situation.

Reaching the car, he found the driver unable to escape.

Demonstrating remarkable resourcefulness, McBroom managed to break one of the car's windows, creating an escape route for the young driver. He then pulled the teen to safety, bringing them out of the water and onto the embankment, where he provided immediate assistance.

Authorities and emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, taking over from McBroom.
