Odisha's Kandhamal Witness to Deadly Anti-Maoist Encounter

A recent intelligence-led operation in the rugged terrains of Odisha’s Kandhamal district has culminated in a deadly clash, seeing three Maoist insurgents killed in a fierce exchange of fire with state security personnel. The encounter, which unfolded in a dense forest area bordering Boudh district, marks a notable success for the forces battling the long-standing insurgency in the region.

Sources indicate that the District Voluntary Force (DVF) and the Special Operations Group (SOG) were conducting a meticulously planned anti-Maoist sweep deep within the Gochapada forest range. This particular stretch is well-known as a transit route and hideout for extremist groups. It appears the security teams, acting on specific intelligence regarding the presence of Maoist cadres, stumbled upon a camp, leading to an immediate and intense confrontation.

The gunfight, as described by officials, was sharp and sustained, echoing through the otherwise quiet forest. When the smoke cleared and the area was secured after the Maoists retreated, a search operation revealed the bodies of two male and one female Maoist cadre at the encounter site, a grim testament to the intensity of the clash.

Beyond the human cost, the security forces made significant recoveries, which included an INSAS rifle, a carbine, and a shotgun, alongside a substantial cache of ammunition.
