Nova Scotia Audit Reveals Hurdles for Patients Seeking Out‑of‑Province Care

When a Nova Scotian needs a highly specialised test or treatment that simply isn’t available in the province, the story often turns into a logistical nightmare. The latest audit, released by the provincial health department, paints a clear picture: patients are hitting roadblocks at every turn.

According to the report, more than a third of respondents said they had to wait longer than the officially recommended timeframe because the needed service was only provided out of province. Some families ended up spending weeks arranging travel, accommodation and additional medical appointments – a burden that many could barely afford.

It’s not just the money. The audit highlights emotional strain, too. One patient recounted how her teenage son missed an entire school term while travelling to another province for a cardiac procedure. “We felt like we were stuck between a rock and a hard place,” she said, echoing the frustration felt by many.

Health officials acknowledge the gaps, pointing to a shortage of specialised physicians and equipment in certain rural areas. While they promise to invest in training and infrastructure, critics argue that progress is too slow and that interim solutions, such as better coordination with neighbouring provinces, are needed right now.

In the meantime, advocacy groups are urging the government to create a clearer pathway for out‑of‑province referrals, streamline reimbursement processes and provide travel subsidies. Until then, patients and their families will likely continue to navigate a patchwork of services that leaves them feeling both exhausted and uncertain about their health futures.
