North Jersey Bakery Scene Shifts: One Closes, Another Grows

After more than a decade of handing out fresh loaves and sweet treats, Veriella's Bakery in Carlstadt quietly announced its final closing last Wednesday. The family‑run shop, which had been a neighborhood staple for 14 years, posted a short farewell note that spoke of "wonderful years" and lasting friendships, but offered no clear explanation for the shutdown.

Across town, the local bakery landscape was buzzing with a very different kind of news. Dan Bakery and Café – a venture that got its start in Morristown – just opened a spacious new spot at 500 Washington Street in Hoboken, and has simultaneously rolled out a second location in New York City.

Walking into the Hoboken site, you’re greeted by the aroma of coffee, raspberry‑filled croissants, and a honey cake that co‑owner Aijan Oztemir swears is their bestseller. "We bake everything fresh every day," he told us, smiling as customers lined up for cinnamon rolls and ham‑spinach croissants.

The space itself has a bit of a story. Before Dan Bakery moved in, it housed an ice‑cream shop that eventually folded under competition, and prior to that it was the longtime home of the Hoboken Daily News magazine shop. The turnover feels almost inevitable in a city where tastes evolve quickly.

Dan Bakery’s founders, brothers Anar and Arman Kozhabayev, first opened the original shop last fall, and their rapid expansion shows no sign of slowing. The New York location opened just last month, adding another urban foothold to the brand’s growing footprint.

While the closure of Veriella's leaves a gap for longtime Carlstadt patrons, the buzz around Dan Bakery’s growth reminds us that the local food scene is always in motion—some doors close, others swing wide open.
