Night of Gunfire Leaves Five Shot Across NYC

When the clock struck just after seven on Sunday evening, gunshots erupted in several neighborhoods, turning a quiet night into a nightmare for residents from Far Rockaway to the Bronx.

Police say the first victim was a 17‑year‑old boy who was hit in the chest behind a NYCHA building on Beach 40th Street near Beach Channel Drive. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital and, thankfully, is listed in stable condition. Authorities believe the teen was an accidental target, caught up in a dispute he didn’t know about.

Not long after, a rifle‑fire incident in Tremont left an 18‑year‑old male with a bullet lodged in his back at the corner of East 175th Street and Bathgate Avenue. He survived after treatment at St. Barnabas Hospital. Two suspects fled the scene in a car, and a rifle was recovered by officers.

The deadliest blow came just before 8 p.m. on Lafayette Avenue near Hunts Point Avenue, where 29‑year‑old Luis Cano was shot in the chest. He was taken to Lincoln Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The motive remains under investigation and the shooter is still at large.

Earlier, just after six, two senior men were caught in a drive‑by near Yankee Stadium. While they were playing dominoes on East 157th Street and Gerard Avenue, a passing vehicle opened fire, wounding a 65‑year‑old in the leg and a 72‑year‑old in the hand. Both men survived after treatment at Lincoln Medical Center.

In total, the city logged five victims that night—two teenagers, one adult who died, and two seniors. The NYPD reported 22 shootings with 28 victims in the week leading up to Sunday, more than double the same period last year. The Bronx alone accounted for 14 of those incidents.

Even with the recent spike, year‑to‑date figures show a slight decline in gun violence, with 471 shootings and 573 victims so far in 2026 compared with 520 incidents and 652 victims in 2025.

Police continue to search for the suspects and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
