Nicaragua Takes Germany to the UN’s Highest Court Over Alleged Violations

In a move that has surprised diplomats worldwide, Managua handed a formal complaint to the International Court of Justice – the UN’s top judicial body – last week. Nicaragua’s foreign ministry says Germany’s recent policies amount to a clear breach of the nation’s sovereignty.

According to the Nicaraguan filing, Berlin has been providing safe haven and logistical support to members of an opposition group that the Sandinista government labels a “terrorist organization.” The complaint argues that by sheltering these individuals, Germany is effectively intervening in Nicaragua’s internal affairs, something the UN Charter explicitly forbids.

German officials, for their part, have dismissed the accusations as “politically motivated” and have vowed to defend their actions in the court. They point out that the individuals in question have sought asylum under internationally recognised refugee protections, a right that Germany believes it must honour.

The case will now be examined by the ICJ, which will decide whether Germany’s conduct indeed violates the principle of non‑intervention and other treaty obligations. Both sides have indicated they are prepared for a lengthy legal battle, and the outcome could set a notable precedent for how states treat political dissidents abroad.
