It's a significant blow, especially for those employees and their families, with the closure slated to be complete by October 31, 2026.

This particular plant, located at 8835 General Drive in Plymouth, was actually a fairly recent acquisition for Niagara Bottling. Just this past June, the company took over Absopure’s retail bottled water business, which, as it turns out, included this very facility. One might have thought this acquisition would signal growth and stability, but unfortunately, it seems the opposite is true for this specific location in the long run.

The decision, as Niagara Bottling has stated in its official filings, comes down to what they term "company reorganization." It’s a phrase we hear often in the corporate world, and while it might make sound business sense on paper for a large corporation, it always carries a very real, human cost. For these 86 individuals, this reorganization translates directly into unemployment, a daunting prospect in any economy, let alone facing the holidays.

The company officially filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN notice, with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity in mid-September. These filings are absolutely crucial, acting as an early warning system for employees and the state when significant layoffs or plant closures are on the horizon. The notice indicates that the affected workers will be let go gradually, with the final phase occurring by that late October deadline.

It's always a bittersweet moment when one company acquires another, especially in the manufacturing sector. The hope is often for expansion, innovation, and crucially, job security for the existing workforce. In this instance, however, Niagara Bottling's strategic decision to reorganize after absorbing Absopure's operations has led to a consolidation that, regrettably, leaves a number of Michiganders without work.
