Newfoundland and Labrador NDP Gears Up for Pivotal Leadership Election

The political landscape in Newfoundland and Labrador is heating up as the provincial New Democratic Party announces September 21 as the date for its crucial leadership election. This significant vote follows the resignation of former leader Jim Dinn in June, who stepped down citing health reasons, leaving a void at the helm of the party.

The race officially kicked off with the close of leadership nominations on Friday, July 19th.

While the specific candidates vying for the top spot are yet to be fully revealed, the stage is now set for party members to decide who will guide the NDP forward.

Eligible members will have a week-long window to cast their ballots, with voting opening on September 14 and closing on September 21.

To ensure accessibility for all, the party is offering both online and mail-in voting options, allowing members from across the province to participate in this vital democratic process. Only members who have been in good standing for at least 30 days prior to the ballot opening are eligible to vote.

Currently, the Newfoundland and Labrador NDP holds three seats in the House of Assembly.

These are represented by Jim Dinn (St. John's Centre), Jordan Brown (Labrador West), and Lela Evans (Torngat Mountains). Evans, who previously ran for the leadership in 2021 before withdrawing, notably crossed the floor from the Progressive Conservative party in 2023, adding an interesting dynamic to the party's current composition.

The upcoming election continues a pattern of leadership changes for the provincial NDP.

The party saw Alison Coffin elected leader in 2020, only for her to lose her seat in the subsequent 2021 provincial election. Jim Dinn then stepped in as interim leader before being officially acclaimed as permanent leader in 2022. Now, with Dinn's departure, the party seeks stability and a new vision to strengthen its voice in the provincial legislature.
