Netflix Greenlights New ‘Lonesome Dove’ Series

It’s official: Netflix is taking another swing at the classic western that first captivated TV audiences back in 1989. The streaming service announced this week that it has ordered a new limited‑series version of Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer‑prize‑winning novel Lonesome Dove. The project lands in the hands of the duo behind Netflix’s upcoming East of Eden—actress‑writer Zoe Kazan and veteran screenwriter Jeb Stuart.

Both Kazan and Stuart will serve as co‑showrunners, writers and executive producers, working alongside a roster of seasoned collaborators. Teton Ridge Entertainment, which secured the rights to McMurtry’s sprawling tetralogy last year, will co‑produce. Other executive producers include Thomas Tull, Jillian Share, Jen Gorton, Jon Jashni, Diana Ossana and Curtis McMurtry of the McMurtry Estate.

For anyone who remembers the 1989 CBS miniseries starring Robert Duvall, the story feels almost familiar and yet entirely fresh. The original adaptation drew in a staggering 26 million viewers, spawned sequels like Return to Lonesome Dove and Streets of Laredo, and cemented the tale of former Texas Rangers Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call as an enduring part of American pop culture.

The new series will follow those same legendary cowboys as they embark on one final, perilous cattle drive—from the Rio Grande all the way to the untamed reaches of Montana. Along the way, they’ll be joined by a colorful cast of frontier characters, each grappling with longing, friendship, love, and the harsh realities of life on the edge of civilization.

“‘Lonesome Dove’ is one of the great American stories, and there was no question we wanted to follow Zoe and Jeb wherever they went next,” said Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada. “After ‘East of Eden,’ we know exactly what they’re capable of—the depth of character, the sweep of place, the emotional precision. This material deserves that level of care.”

Kazan and Stuart echoed that sentiment, noting they approach the material “with love and respect” and can’t wait to “hit the trail” with McCrae, Call and the rest of the beloved characters. Jillian Share added that the story “only comes along once in a generation,” and the team sees a unique chance to bring McMurtry’s world to a new audience.

Longtime collaborator Diana Ossana, who co‑created the original CBS miniseries, also weighed in. “‘Lonesome Dove’ has been part of my creative life for decades,” she said. “Its characters, landscape, and profound understanding of friendship and loss have stayed with me, and it is deeply meaningful to help bring this newly imagined, extraordinary world to a contemporary generation while preserving the emotional truths that make Larry’s work timeless.”

The series is still in early development, but fans of westerns and literary adaptations alike can already feel the excitement building. With Netflix’s global reach and Kazan‑Stuart’s proven storytelling chops, the hope is that this fresh take will honor the source material while delivering a modern, cinematic experience.
