Well, NASA just added another big one— a 114‑foot (34‑meter) radio‑frequency antenna planted in the desert near Barstow, California. It’s a tidy little upgrade that should free up a bit of elbow room for the ever‑crowded Deep Space Network (DSN).

The DSN is the lifeline for more than 40 active probes ranging from rovers on Mars to the Voyager pair that now wander beyond the solar system. It’s also the voice‑to‑Earth for NASA’s Artemis missions, both the uncrewed test flight in 2022 and the crewed flight scheduled for 2026. Those lunar trips have been hogging the network, leaving less bandwidth for the many robotic explorers.

“We’re trying to add capacity and more antennas, but we can’t keep up with the demand that’s currently out there,” explained Brad Arnold, the DSN manager at JPL, during a recent Space News briefing. He warned that the Artemis program is the “gorilla in the room,” meaning human missions inevitably take priority over the quieter, robotic ones.

That tension isn’t new. The DSN’s roots stretch back to 1963, when it replaced an earlier three‑station network that JPL had run for the Army. Since then, those huge 70‑meter dishes have carried the words of Neil Armstrong from the Moon, beamed back the first images from Mars rovers, and relayed data showing Voyager’s drift into interstellar space.

Now, the new dish— officially called Deep Space Station 23 (DSS‑23)— sits alongside the familiar 230‑foot (70‑meter) behemoth at Goldstone. It slipped into service on Aug. 3, initially locking onto NASA’s Chandra X‑ray Observatory. DSS‑23 is the fifth of six 34‑meter antennas slated for the DSN’s Aperture Enhancement Project, a plan that kicked off in 2009.

Why 34 meters? It’s a sweet spot: big enough to pick up faint signals from distant spacecraft, yet small enough to be built faster and cheaper than the giant 70‑meter dishes. The final antenna, DSS‑33, will be erected at the Canberra complex in Australia by 2029, completing the upgrade.

The project hasn’t been smooth sailing. A 2015 Inspector General report pegged the whole enhancement at $362 million, but costs have ballooned to about $706 million, and the schedule has slipped roughly five years. Still, NASA is confident the extra dishes will keep the DSN from choking as more missions—both NASA’s and those from other space agencies—lean on the network.

Looking ahead, the agency’s long‑range vision includes a permanent Moon base by the 2030s, complete with its own “coordinated lunar network” to talk to surface assets. Until then, the Deep Space Network remains the universe’s most reliable telephone line, and the new California dish is the latest handset in the kit.
