Mumbai’s DRI Cracks Down on Chinese‑Led Gold Smuggling Ring

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence’s Mumbai Zonal Unit pulled the curtain back on a daring gold‑smuggling operation that, quite literally, was moving on a treadmill. In a raid that spanned several cities, investigators recovered 691.870 grams of 24‑carat gold – valued at roughly ₹1.10 crore – that had been cleverly concealed inside a treadmill motor imported from Hong Kong.

According to the DRI, the gold‑laden motor arrived at the Air Cargo Complex in Mumbai as part of a legitimate commercial shipment. It was only after a routine customs check that officers spotted the irregularity and, after a meticulous search, unearthed the precious metal hidden within the motor’s core.

The fallout was swift. Two individuals were taken into custody: a Chinese national believed to be the mastermind behind the scheme, and an Indian citizen who managed the importing firm. Both have been charged under the Customs Act of 1962.

In the days that followed, DRI teams fanned out across Mumbai, Chennai, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu, conducting raids and interrogations to untangle the broader network. Early findings suggest that the conspirators had devised a sophisticated modus operandi – smuggling gold by slipping it into everyday goods destined for Indian ports.

While the seized gold is now in police custody, authorities say the investigation is still unfolding. They are piecing together the full extent of the operation, tracing financial trails, and looking for any additional accomplices who might have been involved.

This bust underscores the vigilance of Indian customs agencies and serves as a stark reminder that even the most ingenious smuggling tactics can be exposed with diligent scrutiny.
