Monsoon Ramps Up: Heavy Showers and Sharp Cool‑Down Expected Across North and Northeast India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm – an active southwest monsoon is set to sweep across north‑west, central and eastern India over the next few days. Expect heavy, even extremely heavy, rain in the hills of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand, and a deluge across the entire northeastern belt.

In Delhi, the heat that lingered through the weekend finally gets a break. Forecasts show the city’s high tumbling from around 40 °C on Sunday to roughly 30 °C by Tuesday as the clouds gather. Scattered thunderstorms will pepper the capital from Monday through Wednesday, complete with occasional lightning and breezy gusts of 20‑30 km/h.

Temperatures in the National Capital Region will linger in the low‑30s during the day, while night‑time lows hover near 30 °C. Ghaziabad may see a high of 39 °C and a low of 34 °C, Gurugram could touch 40 °C at its peak, and Faridabad might stay a shade cooler, swinging between 29 °C and 32 °C.

Moving north‑west, the IMD warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, with isolated extremely heavy bursts in parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal and Uttarakhand. Those downpours raise the spectre of flash floods and landslides, especially in the hilly terrain.

Central India won’t be spared either. Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra are all in the line of the monsoon’s wet spell, expecting widespread showers.

Further east, the monsoon’s grip stays firm. West Bengal and Sikkim may see isolated extremely heavy rain, while Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand are likely to be drenched with heavy to very heavy showers.

The northeast, as always, bears the brunt. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are all slated for heavy rainfall throughout the week – the kind that can turn roads into rivers.

On the western front, the Konkan coast and Goa should brace for widespread rain, and Gujarat plus parts of Maharashtra will get scattered showers. The south stays active too: Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu will all see widespread rain, with thunderstorms and gusty winds making occasional appearances.

Bottom line? Pack an umbrella, keep an eye on local alerts and, if you’re travelling across these vulnerable zones, be ready for sudden changes – the monsoon is back in full force and it’s not pulling any punches.
