The much-anticipated monsoon has officially arrived, bringing with it not just the promise of relief from scorching temperatures but also a serious warning for Maharashtra. While Mumbai has enjoyed a few days of pre-monsoon drizzles, offering a welcome respite, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now issued a series of alerts, indicating that the state is bracing for a significant increase in rainfall intensity over the coming days.

As the skies darken and the wind picks up, the IMD has placed various districts under a tiered warning system, urging residents and authorities to remain vigilant.

A ‘Yellow Alert’ has been declared for the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, along with its neighboring regions Thane and Palghar, signaling the likelihood of light to moderate rainfall. This means commuters should prepare for potential disruptions and slippery roads.

The coastal districts of Raigad and Ratnagiri are under an ‘Orange Alert,’ indicating the strong possibility of heavy to very heavy downpours. The most severe warning, a ‘Red Alert,’ has been issued for Sindhudurg, where exceptionally heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated. This level of alert necessitates urgent action and preparedness for significant impacts.

The IMD’s detailed forecast predicts that these intense conditions will persist, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in isolated places across Maharashtra from June 8th to 11th.

This widespread expectation means that while some areas might get a gentle wash, others are likely to face the full fury of the monsoon. People residing in low-lying areas or near rivers should be particularly cautious.

Prior to these stronger forecasts, Mumbai had already been experiencing light rainfall for the past two to three days.
