Monsoon Mayhem: 17 Dead as Floods and Landslides Ravage J‑K, Uttarakhand and Nagaland

Arriving in the twilight, he convened a high‑level meeting at the Civil Secretariat around 6 pm, coordinating relief efforts and ordering an immediate suspension of the Amarnath Yatra on both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes. Even the base camps at Baltal, Nunwan‑Chandanwri and the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu have been placed under a strict no‑movement order.

Further east, Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district saw a different kind of tragedy: a sudden lightning strike claimed two lives. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported that 84 roads — including two national highways — have been blocked by debris and water. An orange alert now hangs over districts such as Dehradun, Tehri and Haridwar, while a yellow warning covers Chamoli, Almora and Pithoragarh.

In the far‑flung hills of Nagaland’s Mon district, flash floods rattled villages and left at least three people dead. Local officials warned that the death toll could still climb as rescue teams continue to wade through inundated hamlets.

Weather forecasts for the coming days remain bleak. Meteorologists predict moderate to widespread rain across Jammu & Kashmir until July 23, while Uttarakhand can expect heavy to extremely heavy showers that may linger for several more days. As rivers swell and slopes give way, authorities across the region are urging residents to stay indoors, avoid travel on vulnerable roads, and keep a close watch on official alerts.
