Monsoon Fury Claims Life in Chennai: Sanitation Worker Electrocuted Amidst Relentless Rains

A somber atmosphere hangs over Chennai as relentless monsoon rains continue to lash Tamil Nadu, bringing with them both disruption and tragedy. The city, already bracing for more downpours, was shaken by the unfortunate death of a 45-year-old sanitation worker, R. Marimuthu, who was electrocuted in the Chintadripet area on Tuesday.

Marimuthu, a dedicated conservancy worker, was performing his duties when he tragically came into contact with a snapped live wire, an insidious hazard amplified by the waterlogging caused by the heavy rainfall.

His untimely demise serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by frontline workers during extreme weather events and underscores the critical need for robust infrastructure maintenance and safety protocols, especially in urban settings.

The incident coincides with widespread heavy rainfall across various parts of Tamil Nadu.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings, forecasting continued moderate to heavy rains for Chennai and several other coastal and interior districts. Districts like Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Cuddalore are among those expected to bear the brunt of the monsoon's intensity, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.

In response to the challenging weather conditions, the Tamil Nadu government has activated its disaster management machinery.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has been closely monitoring the situation, ensuring that all necessary precautions are in place. Relief camps have been established across affected areas to provide shelter and aid to those displaced or impacted by the rains and potential flooding. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been strategically deployed, ready to assist with rescue and relief operations.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution, advising residents to avoid venturing out unless absolutely necessary, and to steer clear of waterlogged areas, especially those near electrical poles or downed power lines.
