Mitchell Girls Golf: A State Tournament Triumph

What an absolutely thrilling two days it must have been for the Mitchell girls' golf team! Competing at the Class AA state tournament in Yankton, our Lady Kernels, under the watchful eye of Coach Ryker Kreutzfeldt, really dug deep and put on a remarkable display of skill and determination. And the payoff? A fantastic third-place finish, capping off a truly memorable season.

Their total score of 686 over the two rounds, meticulously built from a solid 344 on day one and an even stronger 342 on day two, truly reflects their consistency and focus. Now, it wasn't an easy road, mind you. The competition was fierce, with Harrisburg claiming the top spot with an impressive 637, and O'Gorman right behind them at 642. But taking third among such formidable opponents? That's something to be incredibly proud of, isn't it?

Leading the charge for Mitchell, and honestly, just playing some stellar golf, was Lizzie Tyler. Tying for sixth overall with a two-day total of 159 (a fantastic 79 followed by an 80), she was an absolute rock for the team. You could just feel the determination and precision in every swing she took out on the course. Her performance set a high bar and certainly inspired her teammates.

But a team effort is just that—a team effort, right? Every single stroke counts, and the other Lady Kernels certainly rose to the occasion. Right behind Lizzie, Addison Leibel continued to impress, securing a 12th-place finish with a total of 172 (84-88). Her steady play and composure under pressure were undoubtedly crucial to the team's overall standing.

Then we have Bailey Newman, who showcased a brilliant comeback, climbing into a tie for 26th place. After a 92 on day one, she bounced back beautifully with an 88 on day two—a great example of mental toughness and resilience, if you ask me. Kaitlyn Pruess also showed her mettle, tying for 34th with a 182 (89-93), contributing valuable scores when they mattered most.

And let's not forget Madalyn Olson, who finished 57th with a 191 (92-99), and Mia Larson, who placed 72nd with a 197 (97-100). Their contributions, while perhaps not always making the immediate headlines, were integral to the team's overall standing. Because in golf, truly, every single shot makes a difference to the final tally.

It’s always interesting to look at the broader picture of the tournament too. Harrisburg's Reagan Southwick, for instance, delivered an incredible individual performance, taking home the overall title with a superb 144, consistently shooting 72s both days. And O'Gorman's Sydney Bormann was right up there as well, tying for second individually. This just underscores the high caliber of competition Mitchell faced and ultimately triumphed within.
