Mistral Secures €3 bn Funding, Reaches €21 bn Valuation – Europe’s Largest Private Tech Round

Mistral raises €3 bn at a €21 bn valuation in a record‑setting European AI funding round

French AI startup Mistral has closed a €3 billion equity round, valuing the company at about €21 billion – the biggest private tech raise in Europe to date. New backers include Samsung and the EU‑backed Scaleup Europe Fund.

France’s Mistral, a three‑year‑old AI specialist, announced on Tuesday that it has pulled in a hefty €3 billion from investors, pushing its valuation to roughly €21 billion (about $24 billion). It’s being billed as the largest equity‑only financing ever for a privately held European technology firm.

The round was co‑led by existing shareholder PSG Equity, while South Korean giant Samsung Electronics and the EU‑backed Scaleup Europe Fund jumped in as newcomers. Both of the latter poured fresh capital into the French venture, underscoring growing interest in Europe’s AI ambitions.

According to CFO Johan Bergqvist, the fresh cash will be funneled into powering Mistral’s next‑generation models and into “frontier research” – the sort of bleeding‑edge work needed to keep pace with titans like OpenAI and Anthropic. “We’re aiming to become Europe’s flagship AI provider,” he said, noting that the continent is keen to avoid dependence on foreign technology.

While the U.S. rivals boast eye‑watering valuations – Anthropic at $965 billion and OpenAI at $852 billion – Mistral is positioning itself as the most promising European contender. The firm expects to hit $1 billion in annual recurring revenue by year‑end, with a client roster that now stretches beyond Europe into Asia and North America.

Talk of an initial public offering has surfaced, but Bergqvist cautioned that any IPO is “an optionality” and “still up in the air,” with no concrete discussions underway. The company’s focus, for now, remains on scaling its technology and cementing its role in Europe’s push for tech sovereignty.

In a related development, Microsoft agreed earlier this summer to spend billions on Mistral’s computing infrastructure across Europe – a deal that bolsters the startup’s hardware capabilities, even though Microsoft did not take part in the recent equity round.

The funding milestone not only marks a financial triumph for Mistral but also signals a broader shift: European policymakers and investors are increasingly willing to back home‑grown AI champions to secure a strategic foothold in the rapidly evolving global AI landscape.
