Mild Tremor Rocks Chamba: A 5.0‑Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Himachal Pradesh

On Tuesday morning, just after 8 a.m. local time, residents of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh felt the ground give way under a shallow, 5.0‑magnitude tremor. The quake’s epicentre was reported to be only a few kilometres north of the town, which meant the shaking was perceptible for several minutes before fading.

Authorities from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the magnitude and depth—about 10 km below the surface—right after the event. While a magnitude‑5 quake can be unsettling, the region’s rugged terrain and relatively low building density helped keep the impact minimal.

Local officials, together with the district disaster management team, promptly set up temporary relief points and urged people to stay calm. "We’ve evacuated schools and government offices for a short while, just to be safe," said District Collector Sukhdev Singh. "Fortunately, there are no reports of injuries or major structural damage so far, but we’re keeping an eye on any aftershocks."

Neighbouring villages reported hearing the tremor, and a few older stone houses showed minor cracks—nothing that required immediate repair. The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) has mobilised emergency response teams, although they are standing by rather than actively engaged.

Historically, the Himalayan belt is seismically active, and Himachal Pradesh has felt stronger quakes in the past. Experts reminded residents that while this particular event was relatively mild, preparedness remains key. Simple steps—like securing heavy furniture, keeping an emergency kit, and knowing evacuation routes—can make a big difference when the earth moves.

For now, life in Chamba is returning to normal. Schools are reopening, markets are bustling, and the usual mountain air is back to its peaceful rhythm. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and any aftershocks will be reported through official channels.
