Matchbox Row Turns Fatal in Delhi: 30‑Year‑Old Man Stabbed to Death Outside Wine Shop

It was supposed to be just another ordinary evening in Keshav Puram, a neighbourhood in northwest Delhi. Bhawani, 30, and his friend Asha Ram, 32, had stopped for a quick drink at a small wine shop when a seemingly trivial argument erupted – they claimed they didn’t have a matchbox to light a cigarette.

What started as a short‑lived spat quickly turned ugly. A trio of by‑standers confronted the pair, demanding the matchbox. Voices rose, fists flew, and before anyone could step in, a knife appeared.

According to the police, Naresh Bahadur – known locally as “Nepali” – 19, lunged forward and drove the blade into Bhawani’s left back. The wound was deep enough to be fatal. Asha Ram, trying to intervene, took a stab to his left lower chest. He was rushed to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where doctors pronounced Bhawani dead on arrival.

Asha survived, though he remains too weak to give a formal statement. He is currently under medical care, while the police are piecing together the exact sequence of events.

Investigators say technical surveillance and neighborhood informants helped pinpoint the suspects. Alongside Naresh, another 19‑year‑old, Tarun, was detained for assaulting the victims with his fists. A juvenile, whose name has not been disclosed, was also taken into custody.

The weapon used in the attack – a kitchen‑type knife – was recovered at Naresh’s residence, adding weight to the accusations. A murder case (Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) and an attempt‑to‑murder case (Section 109(1)) have been lodged at Keshav Puram police station.

Police continue to question the accused to understand how a simple dispute over a matchbox spiraled into a fatal confrontation. The incident has left the local community shaken, reminding everyone how quickly tempers can flare and lead to irreversible tragedy.
