Mark Chapman Chooses Casual Deal, Yet Stays in Line for India Tests

New Zealand’s gritty top‑order bat, Mark Chapman, announced on Tuesday that he is stepping away from a full‑season central contract with New Zealand Cricket. Instead, he’s signing a "casual" arrangement for 2026‑27 – a move that gives him the freedom to chase an opportunity in the Australian Big Bash League.

Don’t mistake the word “casual” for a lack of commitment. Chapman made it clear that he will still be on the radar for the Black Caps when the home series against India kicks off later this October. He joins a small cohort of fellow casual‑contracted players – Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne and Tim Seifert – who will also be eligible for selection.

The 32‑year‑old, born in Hong Kong but qualifying through his father, has been a regular fixture for the Kiwis since his debut in 2018. With 37 ODIs and 113 T20Is under his belt, his experience is valuable, especially as the All‑format 12‑match showdown with India looms.

Speaking to the media, Chapman expressed gratitude toward New Zealand Cricket, saying, "I’m thankful for the support throughout my career. The India series is something we’re all excited about, and I’m fully committed to giving my best when the time comes."

The ripple effect of his contract shift was felt in the northern districts, where fast‑bowler Matthew Fisher finally earned his first central contract, completing the 20‑player roster for the season. Fisher’s recent career‑best 3/40 against the West Indies in an ODI highlighted why the board was eager to secure his services.

Daryl Gibson, NZC’s chief high‑performance officer, said the reshuffle opens doors for emerging talent. "With Matt joining the central list, it frees up space for another promising athlete in Northern Districts to continue developing," he noted.

The upcoming India tour will begin at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22, featuring two T20Is, followed by a trio of ODIs across various venues and concluding with two Tests in November. All eyes will be on whether Chapman’s BBL stint sharpens his bat ahead of the crucial home summer.
