When you hear the first burst of trumpets and the deep, resonant thump of the guitarrón, you can’t help but feel the room shift. That’s exactly what Mariachi Monarca does wherever they set up, and Fresno is starting to notice.

The group, founded by director Gael Martínez and longtime guitarrón player Esmeralda López, began as a modest gathering of friends who loved traditional Mexican songs. “We just wanted to play for fun,” Gael told us, smiling, “but the community kept asking us back.”

Those requests have turned into a steady stream of gigs. From the elegant rows of Engelman Cellars, where the band added a splash of color to wine tastings, to the buzzing Tower Porch Fest, where crowds danced between food trucks, Mariachi Monarca’s repertoire ranges from classic sones to upbeat contemporary hits.

Even the Fresno Grizzlies have jumped on board. A recent game at Chukchansi Park featured a halftime set that got the entire stadium clapping along, a testament to how well the band’s energy translates to a sports setting.

Perhaps the most exciting development is the new partnership with Fresno State football. Esmeralda explained, “Playing the fight song before a home game feels like we’re part of something bigger—honoring both our heritage and the school’s spirit.” The collaboration promises regular performances at upcoming matches, giving students and fans alike a taste of authentic mariachi flair.

Beyond the big venues, the group still finds time for intimate private parties, where they sprinkle a little cultural magic into birthdays, anniversaries and community celebrations. “Every event feels personal,” Gael says, “and that’s what keeps us going.”

With each new invitation, Mariachi Monarca not only entertains but also educates, sharing stories behind the songs and keeping Hispanic traditions alive in the heart of the Central Valley.
