Manipur's Aquatic Harvest: A Grand Celebration of Fish and Family Ahead of Ningol Chakouba

Manipur is once again buzzing with festive energy, as the state successfully hosted its much-anticipated annual State Level Fish Fair Cum Crop Production Competition. This vibrant event serves as a magnificent prelude to the revered Ningol Chakouba festival, a time when families gather to celebrate enduring bonds and share hearty feasts.

Held at the sacred Thangjing Temple complex in Moirang, the fair was more than just a marketplace; it was a showcase of Manipur's rich aquatic bounty and the dedication of its fish farming community.

Around 100 passionate fish farmers and fishermen from various districts converged, bringing with them an impressive array of freshwater delights. From the majestic Rohu, Catla, and Mrigal to the popular Grass Carp and Common Carp, and cherished local varieties like Pengba, Ngaton, and Ukabi, the stalls brimmed with fresh, locally-produced fish, ready to grace the tables of Ningol Chakouba.

The event also highlighted the state government's ambitious vision for a self-reliant Manipur in fish production.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, gracing the occasion, emphasized the significant strides being made. He proudly noted the substantial increase in fish production over recent years, attributing it to concerted efforts and initiatives aimed at supporting local fisheries. The ultimate goal, he reiterated, is to achieve complete fish self-sufficiency by 2026, ensuring that every Manipuri household has access to fresh, nutritious, and locally-sourced fish.

Adding to the competitive spirit, cash prizes and certificates were awarded across multiple categories.

Recognitions included awards for the largest fish, highest production, best fish stall, and even incentives for adopting innovative fish farming practices. This not only encouraged healthy competition but also celebrated the hard work and ingenuity of the local farmers.

As the fair wrapped up, the atmosphere was thick with anticipation for Ningol Chakouba.

This unique festival sees married daughters, or 'Ningols,' invited back to their paternal homes for an elaborate feast, symbolizing the unbreakable bond between families. Fish, especially fresh catches from events like this fair, holds a central place in the traditional spread, making the Fish Fair an indispensable part of the festive preparations.
