Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Gives Green Light to Uniform Civil Code Bill

On Sunday, the Madhya Pradesh cabinet convened in Jagdishpur and, after a brisk discussion, gave its thumbs‑up to a draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav presided over the meeting, and the vote was unanimous.

State Minister Pratima Bagri, who spoke to the press afterward, sounded upbeat. “We are talking about a Uniform Civil Code, and Madhya Pradesh is poised to become the fourth state to roll it out fully. It’s about harmony, about treating every citizen the same,” she said, pausing briefly before adding, “I’m sure the people of MP will stand with us.” She highlighted that the legislation would curb practices she termed “harmful rituals” – citing triple talaq and other injustices as examples.

CM Yadav echoed that sentiment, noting that the bill is meant to wipe out discrimination and bring “Ram, Rahim, Ravinder or Robin” under one legal umbrella. “Everyone deserves equal rights, without any bias,” he remarked, offering congratulations to his cabinet colleagues.

The draft now moves to the state assembly, where it will be introduced during the upcoming Monsoon Session, slated to begin tomorrow. If passed, it could set a precedent for other states still wrestling with personal law reforms.

While the announcement has drawn applause from supporters of a unified legal framework, critics remain cautious, warning that implementation will require careful handling of cultural sensitivities. Nevertheless, the government appears confident that the bill will find its footing among the electorate.
