Low‑Pressure Zone Over the Andaman Sea Set to Deepen into a Depression and Hit the Odisha‑Andhra Pradesh Coast by September 23

Bhuba­nes­war – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh bulletin saying that the low‑pressure zone that sprouted yesterday over the North Andaman Sea has shifted west‑north‑westward and now sits over the northern part of the Andaman Sea, spilling into the east‑central Bay of Bengal.

According to the latest outlook, the system is likely to keep its west‑north‑west track, strengthening into a depression over the east‑central Bay of Bengal on September 21. By the next day, September 22, it should have deepened further into a full‑blown deep depression as it slides into the west‑central Bay of Bengal.

Continuing on the same trajectory, forecasters expect the deep depression to edge toward the west‑central and north‑west Bay of Bengal, brushing the southern coast of Odisha and the northern coast of Andhra Pradesh on the morning of September 23. In plain words – the weather will get noticeably worse for that stretch of the coastline.

Wind speeds are projected to pick up in stages. Expect gusts of 40‑50 km/h (peaking at 60 km/h) across the Andaman Sea and adjoining east‑central Bay of Bengal on September 20. Those numbers climb to 45‑55 km/h (up to 65 km/h) on the 21st, and 50‑60 km/h (up to 70 km/h) on the 22nd over the central Bay. By the 23rd, the west‑central Bay could see winds of 55‑65 km/h with gusts touching 75 km/h, persisting into the evening of September 24.

Sea conditions will mirror the wind – starting off rough on September 20, becoming very rough by the 21st‑22nd, and staying at that level through the 24th across the west‑central and north‑west Bay of Bengal, as well as along the coasts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.

Given the mounting hazard, the IMD has warned fishermen to stay clear of the Andaman Sea until September 21, avoid the east‑central and north‑east Bay of Bengal from September 20‑22, and steer clear of the west‑central and north‑west Bay, plus the adjoining coasts, from September 22‑24. Those already at sea are urged to seek safe harbour immediately.
