Lionel Richie Takes a Much-Needed Break After Heart Procedure; Concerts Rescheduled

Fans around the globe are sending waves of well wishes to the iconic Lionel Richie, who, at 77, recently underwent a heart procedure for atrial fibrillation (AFib). This health development has understandably led to the postponement of several upcoming tour dates, including highly anticipated stops in San Francisco, Chicago, and Columbus, Ohio.

News of Richie's procedure broke on September 22, 2026, with his representative quickly reassuring the public that the operation “went perfectly” and that the Grammy-winning artist is “doing great.” Still, a period of recovery is necessary, meaning fans will have to wait a little longer to catch him live. The San Francisco concert at the Chase Center, originally set for September 26, is now on hold, as are shows at the United Center in Chicago on September 30, and the Schottenstein Center in Columbus on October 2.

This isn't the first time Lionel Richie's health has prompted concern on his current tour, which he's been sharing with Earth, Wind & Fire. Back on August 29, following a concert in St. Louis, Richie checked into a local hospital. While TMZ initially reported cardiac testing and possible mild dehydration, his team clarified at the time that the visit was merely a “precautionary” measure. Thankfully, he was released just a few days later on September 2. Before that, the tour even saw its opener in St. Paul, Minnesota, cut short on June 24 when Richie reportedly became dizzy on stage. He did, however, bounce back quickly, returning to perform in Pittsburgh on June 30.

It's been quite a year for the tour overall, hasn't it? Beyond Richie's own health, the San Francisco concert faced an earlier postponement on August 6. That time, the reason was another serious medical emergency: Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris suffered a heart attack, a truly scary moment for the band and their loved ones. So, it's clear these beloved musicians have been navigating some real challenges on the road.

As for Lionel Richie, while he's taking a breather now, the good news is he's expected to make a full return to the stage soon. He’s currently scheduled to kick off his “King of Hearts” residency in Las Vegas on October 14.
