The incident, which occurred around 8 PM, saw a direct hit to the airport's essential VOR/DME (VHF Omnidirectional Range/Distance Measuring Equipment) system.

This sophisticated equipment is vital for pilots to determine their aircraft's position and navigate safely, particularly during approaches and departures. With this critical infrastructure compromised, the safety of flight operations could no longer be guaranteed, forcing authorities to implement immediate restrictions.

An IndiGo flight, 6E 771, inbound from Bengaluru, was the first to experience the impact. Unable to land at the compromised Raipur airport, it was forced to divert to Nagpur, adding unexpected hours to its passengers' journeys. Similarly, an Air India flight, AI 471, scheduled to depart from Delhi for Raipur, found itself delayed indefinitely, leaving passengers at the originating airport in limbo.
