Lifeline Flows: Amaravathi Dam Unlocks Prosperity for Thousands of Acres in Tiruppur and Karur

A wave of relief and renewed hope is sweeping across the agricultural heartlands of Tiruppur and Karur districts as the Amaravathi Dam, a vital lifeline for the region, has commenced its much-anticipated water release. This strategic move, sanctioned by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, is set to transform the landscape, providing essential irrigation for a sprawling 47,117 acres of farmland.

The Water Resources Department (WRD) announced this significant development, confirming that the dam will release water for the first phase of irrigation over a period of 135 days.

Farmers in the command area under the Amaravathi Main Canal can now look forward to a steady supply of 300 million cubic feet of water, a crucial resource that will bolster their agricultural pursuits, particularly the cultivation of groundnut.

This timely intervention comes as a blessing for thousands of farmers who depend on the dam's waters.

With the southwest monsoon having recently concluded, the decision to release water ensures that the agricultural cycle can continue uninterrupted, safeguarding livelihoods and contributing significantly to food production in the region.

Water Resources Department Minister Durai Murugan highlighted the government's commitment to supporting the farming community.

The release aims to ensure robust crop yields and economic stability for those living off the land. As of the recent measurement, the Amaravathi Dam currently holds a healthy level of 69.34 feet against its full capacity of 90 feet, sustained by an inflow of 400 cusecs while maintaining an outflow of 100 cusecs prior to this irrigation release.

This robust water availability underpins the decision, promising a consistent supply throughout the irrigation period.
