Life Imprisonment for Sacked Mohali ASI in Live-in Partner's Tragic Murder

Mohali, Punjab – A grim chapter in the city's criminal history concluded today as Sukhwinder Singh, a former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with the Mohali police, was handed a life sentence for the heinous murder of his live-in partner, Manpreet Kaur. The verdict, delivered by the Mohali district court, brings a measure of justice to a case that has gripped the community since the tragic incident unfolded nearly two years ago.

Principal Sessions Judge Avtar Singh pronounced the life term for Singh, who was convicted under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for murder.

The incident dates back to the night of October 10, 2021, when Manpreet Kaur, then 34, was found lifeless in Sukhwinder Singh's rented accommodation in Phase 7, Mohali.

According to police investigations and court testimonies, a heated argument between the couple escalated into violence. It was alleged that Singh, fueled by suspicion of infidelity, brutally strangled Manpreet with a stole, leading to her untimely death.

The horrific discovery was made the following day by the landlord, who, upon finding the door ajar, entered the room and discovered Manpreet's body.

The landlord promptly alerted the authorities, leading to the registration of an FIR against Sukhwinder Singh at the Phase 8 police station. Singh was subsequently arrested, and a thorough investigation commenced, gathering crucial evidence that would eventually lead to his conviction.

During the trial, details emerged painting a complex picture of the relationship between Singh and Kaur.

Both individuals had been previously married; Sukhwinder Singh had two children from his first marriage, while Manpreet Kaur also had a child from a prior relationship. The couple had been living together, but their relationship was reportedly fraught with tensions and arguments, culminating in the fatal altercation.

Adding another layer to Sukhwinder Singh's troubled past, it was revealed that he had been dismissed from police service in February 2021, prior to Manpreet's murder.
