Leaders Mourn Chennamma, the Unseen Pillar Behind Former PM HD Deve Gowda

Chennamma, the wife of former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) chief H D Deve Gowda, passed away on Sunday following a prolonged battle with illness. The news rippled through Karnataka’s political circles, prompting an outpouring of grief that crossed party lines.

BJP MP K Sudhakar was among the first to speak, describing her as a “pillar of strength” who steadied the Gowda household while her husband was absorbed in public life. “She ensured their children received a good education and looked after the family when the political storms came,” he said in a statement to ANI.

From the opposition, Karnataka Minister Ramalinga Reddy called her a role model, noting her simple demeanor and unwavering support. “She was the wife of our former Prime Minister, and her life was a lesson in humility,” he added.

High‑ranking state leaders also paid their respects in person. Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara and Home Minister Priyank Kharge visited the Gowda residence, offering condolences and a quiet moment of remembrance.

Perhaps the most emotional tribute came from H D Kumaraswamy, the Union Minister and son of the late leader. He recalled his mother’s modesty and how her sacrifices propelled his father’s rise to the nation’s top post. “Even when my father became Prime Minister, my mother’s life remained simple. She fought health problems for a year, and we did everything we could, but God’s will prevailed,” he said, his voice trembling.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his sympathies, writing, “Deeply pained by the passing of Chennamma. She was admired for her humility and her passion for serving society. My thoughts are with Shri Deve Gowda and his family during this sorrowful time.”

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge labeled Chennamma the “quiet strength” of the Gowda family, while former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remembered her as a steadfast companion throughout decades of political turbulence. Across the spectrum, one sentiment was clear: Chennamma’s unassuming presence had been the steady anchor behind a very public life.
