Late goal sends San Jose Sharks to heartbreaking loss

Vladimir Tarasenko scored with 3.3 seconds left in the third period to lift the Ottawa Senators past the San Jose Sharks 5 4 on Saturday. With the Senators applying pressure, Tarasenko shook off a check from Justin Bailey, grabbed a rebound after a save from goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, and fired it into the empty net for the game winning goal.

An official review by the NHL upheld the call, as the Sharks fell to 1 2 0 on this five game road trip and 1 13 0 since mid December. Mario Ferraro had three assists, including one on Filip Zadina’s game tying goal with 3:04 left that tied the game 4 4. The Sharks briefly held a second period before they allowed consecutive goals to Brady Tkachuk and Drake Batherson.

The Sharks led 3 2 at the 6:20 mark of the second period after Kevin Labanc scored his second goal of the season off an assist from Ferraro. But Tkachuk responded with a goal just 51 seconds later, and Batherson gave the Senators the lead for good with 7:01 left in the second period. Anthony Duclair and Marc Edouard Vlasic also scored for the Sharks, who will be staying in Ottawa overnight after a powerful storm was set to hit Western New York, forcing the closure of the area’s biggest airport.
