La La Land’s Iconic Poster Gets a Long‑Awaited Hand Fix

It’s been ten years since Damien Chazelle’s dreamy musical La La Land first lit up the silver screen, and fans are getting a little something extra this summer. Lionsgate, the studio behind the movie, posted a fresh take on the original theatrical poster – this time with Ryan Gosling’s hand rendered flat and outstretched, exactly as the actor had wanted.

Gosling has been pretty vocal about his annoyance with the original artwork. In a 2024 interview with The Wall Street Journal, he recalled the shooting of the iconic ballroom scene and confessed that the pose used for the promotional material never matched his own vision. “We were supposed to have our hands up, and I thought it would be cool to put my hand more flat even though everyone told me it wasn’t cool,” he said, adding that the mis‑aligned hand still “haunts” him when he sees the poster.

Fans of the film – and of Gosling’s trademark “La La Hand” as he jokingly calls it – will notice the subtle yet satisfying change. The new design was shared on Lionsgate’s Instagram account with the caption, “A minor adjustment,” accompanied by the familiar splash of pastel colors and the pair’s smiling faces.

Coinciding with the updated artwork, La La Land is slated for a limited theatrical run beginning Sunday, August 16, in Dolby Cinema venues at AMC Theatres. The re‑release gives a new generation a chance to experience the movie that swept six Oscars, including Best Director and Best Cinematography, and bagged a record‑breaking seven Golden Globes.

For the record, Gosling earned a Golden Globe for his turn as aspiring pianist Sebastian, while Emma Stone took home the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the star‑struck actress Mia. The film’s modest $30 million budget blossomed into a $447 million worldwide haul, and a Broadway musical adaptation is reportedly in the works, though no premiere date has been announced.
