While the city is no stranger to monsoon showers, the sheer volume and persistence of the recent downpour have caught many off guard, particularly those meticulously crafting the elaborate temporary structures that house the goddess Durga.

“We poured our heart and soul into creating something unique this year, but the rain has destroyed so much,” lamented a disheartened puja committee member from a prominent north Kolkata locality.

“We are trying our best to pump out the water, but every time we make progress, another spell of rain washes away our efforts. The idols are safe for now, but the structure around them is compromised.”

The impact extends beyond mere structural damage. Durga Puja is an emotion in Kolkata, a time when the entire city comes alive with creativity, devotion, and community spirit.

The sight of damaged pandals, the mud-filled access points, and the struggle to salvage decorations dampens the collective mood.
