Kerala's Political Storm: Assembly Absences Ignite Fierce Debates and Accusations

A fresh wave of political tension has gripped Kerala as the Assembly Speaker, A.N. Shamseer, initiated action against two prominent Congress leaders, Rahul Mamkootathil and UDF MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan, for their prolonged absence from legislative sessions. The move has quickly escalated into a heated war of words, with the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) vehemently accusing the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government of employing politically motivated tactics.

The controversy centers on notices issued by the Speaker's office, prompting leaders like Opposition Leader V.D.

Satheesan to clarify the situation. Satheesan, speaking to the press, stated that he had not yet received any official communication regarding Mr. Mamkootathil's absence. This comes at a crucial time, as Mamkootathil is currently under judicial remand, having been arrested in connection with an alleged attack on the Kerala Assembly in March during a protest.

His incarceration has naturally prevented his attendance, adding a layer of complexity to the Speaker's notice.

Adding fuel to the fire, Mathew Kuzhalnadan, a vocal and consistent critic of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, also found himself on the receiving end of a similar notice. Kuzhalnadan has been at the forefront of several Opposition campaigns, challenging the government on various issues, making his inclusion in the list particularly scrutinized by political observers and the UDF alike.

The Speaker's actions are rooted in Rule 152 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, which stipulates that any member absent from House sittings for ten or more consecutive days without obtaining leave will be notified.

While the rule itself is standard, its application in these specific cases has sparked accusations of selective targeting and political vendetta by the UDF against the LDF government.

Opposition Leader Satheesan didn't mince words, highlighting the Opposition's long-standing concern that the LDF government is systematically filing politically motivated cases against their members.

He pointed out that Mamkootathil's arrest itself was viewed by the UDF as an attempt to silence dissenting voices and curb the Opposition's effectiveness. The issuance of an absence notice under these circumstances, according to Satheesan, further reinforces the narrative of targeted harassment.

This incident underscores the increasingly contentious political climate in Kerala, where legislative procedures are often intertwined with broader political battles.

As the notices from the Speaker's office make their way through official channels, the UDF is gearing up to challenge what they perceive as an abuse of power, promising further escalation of the confrontation both inside and outside the Assembly.
