Kerala Teachers Dismissed Over Alleged Role in MDMA Drug Network

In a move that has left many in the state’s education circles stunned, the Kerala Education Department has formally dismissed a contract teacher from Maruthonkara and is poised to fire a second from Koorachundu. Both educators were arrested earlier this month in connection with an MDMA trafficking syndicate operating out of Vadakara.

The police investigation, part of the ongoing Operation Toofan, uncovered what officials describe as a surprisingly modern modus operandi. According to the authorities, the teachers would forward QR‑code images to buyers, allowing money to be transferred straight into the teachers’ bank accounts. Once the payment cleared, a Google Maps pin would be shared, pointing the purchaser to the exact location where the drug was waiting.

Keerthana, a specialist physical‑education teacher at the Perambra Block Resource Centre, was taken into custody on July 11. The Sarva Shiksha Kerala State Project Officer, acting on the police report, terminated her contract while she remains in judicial remand.

Her colleague, Kavya – a special educator at the same centre – was arrested two days later. The department has indicated that a dismissal order will be issued on Wednesday, making her the second teacher to lose her job over the scandal.

Investigators also traced a trail of money flowing between the two teachers and other members of the drug ring. Records show that funds moved from Keerthana’s account into Kavya’s, and further onto accounts belonging to additional suspects. This financial breadcrumb was a key breakthrough after police seized two grams of MDMA from a suspect named Safvan in Vadakara.

The revelation that individuals entrusted with shaping young minds could be involved in drug‑distribution has sent ripples through Kerala’s education community. Both teachers had previously been involved in organising teacher‑training programmes and workshops – duties now starkly contrasted with the alleged role of drug middlemen.

Law enforcement says the probe is far from over. Teams are still piecing together who financed the teachers’ accounts and identifying the primary MDMA supplier. Further questioning of the accused is expected in the coming days, along with a deeper look into the wider network that may involve more unsuspected participants.

For now, the case stands as a stark reminder that even in seemingly respectable professions, the lure of quick cash can lead to troubling choices.
