Kerala Sports Minister Raises Questions Over Messi Friendly Cancellation

Kerala’s sports minister, OJ Janeesh, spoke to reporters on Wednesday, confirming that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with looking into Lionel Messi’s aborted visit to the state is making steady progress. While the probe is still underway, the minister did not shy away from pointing a finger at the previous LDF‑led government, asking how a company with a modest paid‑up capital of just Rs 10 lakh could be given the green light to organise a Rs 200 crore football spectacle.

Messi’s much‑anticipated appearance in Kerala was to be a friendly between the Argentine giants and Australia’s men’s national side at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi on November 17. The plan, outlined on Olympics.com, had even seen the Argentine Football Association (AFA) send a technical team to inspect the venue in September.

However, the sponsors announced last year that the match would be postponed, citing delays in obtaining FIFA’s clearance. They hinted the game might be reshuffled for the next international window, but no concrete dates have emerged. This is especially puzzling because Messi, as part of his “GOAT India Tour”, had already made stops in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi.

During the press briefing, Janeesh said, “The SIT investigation is progressing well. There are several questions that need answers. How did a company with a paid‑up capital of just Rs 10 lakh undertake an event worth Rs 200 crore? There is a lack of clarity on several aspects, and all these issues need to be thoroughly examined.”

The minister’s remarks have stirred the political waters, with opposition parties already demanding greater transparency. Critics argue that awarding such a massive contract to a relatively small outfit raises red flags about due‑process and financial oversight.
