Kerala Breathes Relief: IMD Downgrades Rain Alerts Amidst Continued Vigilance

A collective sigh of relief echoed across Kerala as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the withdrawal of the severe Red alert for heavy rainfall that had gripped parts of the state. This welcome update comes as a positive development, indicating a slight easing of the intense monsoon conditions.

However, the state remains on high alert, with ten districts now under an Orange warning and four others under a Yellow warning, urging continuous vigilance and preparedness.

The IMD's revised forecast brings a shift from the most severe category. While the Red alert for Pathanamthitta and Idukki has been rescinded, these districts, along with Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode, are now under an Orange alert.

This signifies an expectation of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, ranging from 64.5 mm to 204.4 mm within a 24-hour period. Residents in these regions are advised to remain prepared for potential disruptions, including localized flooding and increased water levels.

Adding to the state's cautious outlook, four districts – Palakkad, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod – have been placed under a Yellow alert.

This warning indicates the likelihood of isolated heavy rainfall, prompting local authorities and residents to exercise caution and stay updated on weather developments.

In response to the evolving weather scenario, Chief Secretary V. Venu convened a crucial meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA).

During the meeting, district collectors were issued explicit instructions to ensure round-the-clock control rooms are operational. Furthermore, they were directed to identify and relocate individuals from vulnerable low-lying or landslide-prone areas to designated relief camps, prioritizing public safety.

The authorities are also maintaining a close watch on dam water levels across the state.

District administrations have been instructed to monitor these levels meticulously and issue timely alerts to residents living on river banks well in advance of any necessary dam shutter operations. This proactive approach aims to prevent sudden flooding and ensure the safety of communities downstream.

Further emphasizing safety, the fishing ban along the Kerala coast remains in effect until further notice.

This precautionary measure is crucial due to the continued presence of strong winds and rough seas, which pose significant risks to marine activities. The public is strongly advised to heed all safety warnings, avoid venturing near river banks and coastal areas during heavy rain, and contact emergency services for any assistance.
