Kerala Announces School Holiday on August 3 Amid Heavy Rains

Monday, August 3, will be a quiet day for most students across Kerala. The state’s district administrations have ordered schools and colleges to stay shut, citing relentless rain that’s still pounding the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has even warned that more showers are on the way, so officials decided it’s safer to keep the doors locked.

Here’s the rundown: Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Kannur, Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Kottayam and Idukki have all declared a full‑day holiday for every type of educational institution – from anganwadis and madrasas to professional colleges and tuition centres. The only exception is residential schools and colleges, which are expected to operate as usual unless told otherwise.

Alappuzha, however, chose a slightly different route. Instead of a blanket holiday, the district collector, Shaji V. Nair, announced a partial holiday that applies only to schools and colleges that are currently acting as relief camps, mainly in Chengannur and Kuttanad taluks, along with the usual anganwadis and tuition centres. Examinations that were slated for the day will go ahead without any changes.

Kasaragod – A full closure for all schools, colleges, madrasas and coaching centres. Exams remain on the calendar.

Wayanad – Again, everything shuts down except residential schools. Institutions that are doubling as relief camps will stay closed.

Malappuram – The rain has forced a complete halt for all institutions, but university and PSC exams will go ahead.

Thrissur – Along with schools and colleges, the district also warned people to avoid traveling near rivers, streams, quarries or any water‑logged areas. Safety advice was strongly emphasized.

Kottayam – The holiday message urged students to stay indoors, spend time with family, maybe read a book, and definitely steer clear of flood‑prone zones.

Idukki – All institutions close, though fully residential schools are exempt.

The IMD’s alert map shows an orange warning for twelve districts on Sunday, August 2, which was then downgraded to a yellow warning for ten districts on Monday, including the ones with school closures. The forecast suggests the rain will linger for a few more days, so the authorities are keeping a close eye on the situation.
