Kashmir On High Alert: Jhelum Breaches Danger Mark, Flood Threat Looms

Kashmir is currently grappling with a severe flood threat as the iconic Jhelum river has surged past the danger mark, triggering a widespread flood alert across the valley. Authorities are urging residents in low-lying areas to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant as heavy rainfall continues to swell water bodies, exacerbating the risk of inundation.

The alarm was raised when the water level in the Jhelum at Sangam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district crossed the critical 18-foot mark.

Simultaneously, levels at Ram Munshibagh in Srinagar were also dangerously close to the 16-foot warning threshold, while Asham in north Kashmir saw the river nearing its 14-foot danger mark. This rapid rise in water levels is a direct consequence of relentless downpours that have lashed the region over the past 24 to 48 hours.

In response to the escalating situation, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has moved swiftly, establishing emergency control rooms across all district headquarters.

These centers are tasked with round-the-clock monitoring of the situation and coordinating relief efforts should the need arise. Senior officials have assured the public that all necessary preparations are in place to tackle any eventuality, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation during this challenging period.

The treacherous weather conditions have also led to significant disruptions in connectivity.

The vital Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the sole all-weather road linking Kashmir to the rest of India, has been closed to traffic. Landslides and accumulated debris at multiple points, particularly in the Ramban sector, have rendered the highway impassable. Adding to the isolation, the historic Mughal Road, connecting Poonch and Rajouri districts with Kashmir Valley, has also been shut down due to similar concerns.

While the immediate outlook remains grim, the Meteorological Department has offered a glimmer of hope.

Forecasts suggest a gradual improvement in weather conditions from Sunday afternoon, potentially leading to a respite from the incessant rains. Until then, residents are strongly advised to adhere to safety guidelines, avoid venturing near swollen rivers and streams, and stay updated with official advisories.

The resilience of Kashmir is once again being tested, but collective vigilance and preparedness are key to navigating this natural challenge.
