Karnataka Chief Minister Asks Tamil Nadu Leader to Delay Bengaluru Visit Over Cauvery Issue

On Sunday, Karnataka chief minister D.K. Shivakumar told reporters that Tamil Nadu’s newly‑elected chief minister, Joseph Vijay, had agreed to put off his planned trip to Bengaluru. The postponement, Shivakumar said, is meant to give both sides a breathing space before they tackle the ever‑simmering Cauvery water dispute.

“Mr Vijay was set to come and meet us, but we thought it wiser to wait until the situation on the Cauvery river improves,” Shivakumar explained, adding that recent monsoon rains have brought a modest but welcome relief to the water‑sharing tensions.

When asked whether the Tamil Nadu chief minister would accept Karnataka’s stance, Shivakumar smiled and said, “He’s new to politics, but he’s brave. I’m confident he’ll understand that a more cordial atmosphere will help both our states.” He also stressed that personal or partisan differences should not cloud the larger goal of cooperation.

Shivakumar underscored the sentiment that the two neighboring states share a long‑standing bond, saying, “We should respect each other and work together. After all, we’re all part of one India.” He reiterated that any future meeting would be scheduled when the mood is less charged, aiming for constructive dialogue rather than heated exchanges.

The decision to defer the meeting comes at a time when both governments are under pressure from farmers and local activists who closely monitor every development in the Cauvery row. By choosing to delay, Karnataka hopes to avoid any premature confrontations that could inflame public sentiment on either side.

While the exact date for the rescheduled talks remains unsettled, both leaders have signalled a willingness to reconvene soon, hoping that the improving rainfall patterns will translate into a more favourable environment for negotiations.
